Hide Art to Fine Art: an exhibition depicting the transition from hide to ledger to museum style painting of the Kiowa people

Description
Opening this Friday 2-10-2012 from 6-9pm through mid-April 2012, with funding from the Oklahoma Arts Council and the Norman Arts Council, The Jacobson House Native Art Center presents: Hide Art to Fine Art, an exhibition depicting a time of dramatic change for the Kiowa people as seen through the transition from hide to ledger to museum style painting of the Kiowa people. On loan from the Ralph Foster Museum College of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, Missouri, and never before seen in Oklahoma during contemporary times, are the Gotebo ledger drawings of 1914 depicting his transition from a traditional Kiowa life to Christianity with accompanying text panels from the writings of William C. Meadows and Kenny Harragarra. On exhibit from the Kiowa Tribe are the 1979 portfolio porchoir of the Kiowa Five. Contemporary ledger art by Steven Judd and Sherman Chadlesone and others will also be on exhibit.
Programming: Opening at the Jacobson House this Friday, February 10, 2012 with Indian Taco Sale at 5:00pm, the Gotebo family will give a history talk at 6:30 pm, and Kevin Warren Smith will give an art lecture with slide demonstration at 7:30 pm discussing the factors that led to the transition from hide to ledger to museum style painting. Kiowa film maker Steven Judd will show his films at the Jacobson House in March. In April a book signing with a short reading by N. Scott Momaday will also take place at the Jacobson House Native Art Center.
