SAN FRANCISCO BLUEGRASS & OLD-TIME FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT!
Tonight's show is opening night of the 13th annual San Francisco Bluegrass
& Old-Time Festival. The festival runs February 10-19 and will feature
some of the best of the best, from living legends, hot touring bands, and
local favorites. It's 10 days of craziness, concerts, kids' shows, jam
sessions, workshops, an old-time square dance, and much much more!
THE GOOD LUCK THRIFT STORE OUTFIT (Oakdale) -
Take two prolific, folk-Americana singer-songwriters, a seasoned,
indie-rock veteran of a drummer (see Grandaddy), add in some country-born
and heavy-metal-bred supporting talent and throw on a few suits, and what
do you get: the rough-hewn yet driftwood-smooth, punk-kind-of-country,
good-kind-of-raw of The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. Likened to anything
from Old Crow Medicine Show and The Avett Brothers, Bob Wills and even
Neil Young (depending on which live set you happen to catch) they most
often defy categorization. They describe their efforts as trying to make
good, honest music, that's not afraid of a little fun, that people will
move their feet to, and that also goes real well with a straight road and
a long drive.
THE BROTHERS COMATOSE (SF) -
In less than 3 years the mighty Brothers Comatose have made their way from their living room, street corners, and dive bars of their native San
Francisco, to headlining performances at such legendary places as the
Great American Music Hall, Slim's, the Mystic, and world famous festivals;
Hardly Strictly, High Sierra, Strawberry, and 3x at the SF Bluegrass &
Old-Time Festival. Their shows exude a foot-stomping, shout-along,
drink-along ease that was once a staple in every music playing,
front-stoop-possessing home in the land. Their shows can't help but remind
folk that music is collective, is for dancing, is for sharing, and for
whatever else you might do with friends and family in your own living
room.
EMILY BONN & THE VIVANTS (SF) -
The band perform original foot stompin' tunes about riots, hollers, and
hopping train cars. Largely inspired by the energy of old-time dance
tunes, honky-tonk country and western-swing, The Vivants play their own
brand of American roots music, shining up dusty melodies with modern
arrangements. In former incarnations, Emily honed her songs performing
with the Whoreshoes.
