Description

From the moment of her ascension to the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has been the object of unparalleled scrutiny. But how well do we really know the world's most famous monarch?

The new book, "Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch," by acclaimed biographer Sally Bedell Smith, draws on numerous interviews and never-before-disclosed documents to reveal the public and private lives of Queen Elizabeth II.

On the 60th anniversary year of Queen Elizabeth's ascension, Smith provides a close-up view of a woman known only from a distance, illuminating her personality, sense of humor and intelligence with which she meets the most demanding work and family obligations.

Smith is the author of the best-selling biographies of William S. Paley, Pamela Harriman, Princess Diana, John and Jacqueline Kennedy, and Bill and Hillary Clinton.

A contributing editor at Vanity Fair since 1996, Smith previously worked at Time magazine and The New York Times, where she was a cultural news reporter.

A book signing will follow the program.

Seating is on a space-available basis.
