Description
This unusual trip takes us to the northern end of South Mountain in Pennsylvania. Starting from the charming Trail Town of Boiling Springs, we'll proceed south on the Appalachian Trail past scenic Children's Lake and through the farm fields of Cumberland Valley to the base of South Mountain. We'll then climb to Center Point Knob, so-called because this peak is near the middle of the entire AT. After reaching the summit, we'll pick our way through 550 million-year-old quartzite formations on the aptly-named White Rocks Trail back to the Valley, and then complete our loop along little-used rural roads leading back to Boiling Springs. Total length of this moderate-to-strenuous circuit hike should not exceed 7 miles, with about 600 feet of elevation gain. We'll thaw out afterwards in a friendly tavern in Boiling Springs. Bring beverages, lunch and about $20 for transportation and trip fees. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Forest Glen metro station, Kiss and Ride lot.For further details, contact Craig, (202) 462-0535, or: craighowell1@verizon.net.
