Description
The Latin American Coalition invites you to our third annual Brazilian Celebration, âA NIGHT IN RIOâ. Spend an evening journeying through Brazil and experience traditional dancing, live musical performances of Samba, Bossa Nova, and Brazilian Beats, authentic foods, and arts and crafts. You won't want to miss the contagious energy of the famous Carnival at this one-of-a-kind cultural experience.
The Brazilian Carnival is one of the world's most famous celebrations and many cities and regions worldwide celebrate this pre-lent exhilarating festival. In 2011 we hosted the 2nd Carnival celebration in Charlotte. This SOLD-OUT event was packed with people inside and outside hungry to experience the essence of Brazilian Carnival. For Leila Lima, a Brazilian residing in Charlotte, âA Night in Rio makes me feel like I'm home for a night. It is so welcoming and the beats of the music get into your bloodstream!â
The Carnival celebration will start with free samba lessons to get the crowd moving with Movimentos de Samba. Demonstrations of capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, music and dance, will be provided by JustBrazil. There will be live samba and traditional dancing by Movimentos de Samba and Carolina Latin Dance. Reinaldo Brahn, who just released a new CD in September, will mesmerize the crowd his with Bossa Nova. The globally-known hits of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto and Sergio Mendes will move the crowd with live samba music interpreted by Malandro Soul. The night will close with an exciting live batucada with drumming, dancers and audience participation.
Please come join us for the unforgettable experience of Brazilian Carnival!
The Latin American Coalition, Charlotte's oldest and largest Hispanic service agency, is dedicated to empowering Latino families and promoting full Hispanic participation in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. Our goal is to dismantle the language, economic and social barriers facing the area's more than 125,000 Latinos while at the same time offering the wider community opportunities to learn about and connect with the Latino population.
This event is made possible by: Arts & Science Council, US Airways, Cricket, Fifth Third Bank, Compare Foods, Kimbrell's, Food Lion, Belk, La Noticia and Leblon.
