February Meetup - Native development for Android using the NDK and ARM tools

I'm very happy to announce that we will have Matthew DuPuy, Developer Evangelist at ARM and accomplished mountain climber, presenting for our February 15 meeting! Â Matt will be covering the Android NDK (Native Development Kit) for ARM, DS-5 Community Edition (debugging and performance analysis tools for Eclipse) and open source NEON SIMD libraries.

ARM designs the technology that lies at the heart of a myriad of devices including PDAs, tablets, mobile phones, digital media and music players, hand-held game consoles, calculators and computer peripherals such as hard drives and routers. ARM's comprehensive product offering includes 32-bit RISC microprocessors, graphics processors, enabling software, cell libraries, embedded memories, high-speed connectivity products, peripherals and development tools.  As a result, they have become dominant in the mobile and embedded electronics market, as relatively low-cost, small microprocessors and microcontrollers with low power consumption. As of 2009, ARM processors accounted for approximately 90% of all embedded 32-bit RISC processors.

Matt is a computer engineer who's been working with embedded software and system integration for over a decade. He started using Linux in college in the late 90's and has more than a few lines of code in the USB stacks and drivers as well as many consumer devices from iPods to TVs to navigation systems. After a sabbatical in 2009 to climb Mt. Everest, he returned to engineering contracting until the summer of 2011. He has a keen interest in Android and Google's 'release first and iterate fast' designs and was hired at ARM as a developer evangelist to both improve ARM's tools, libraries and compiler technologies as they relate to Android internally and to solicit developer input from independent applications developers as well as major device manufacturers. He is very interested to hear what developers consider as a priority to get the best performance and user experience from ARM powered devices and is happy to share some of the tools and projects ARM has been working on.

Here are driving directions: Bridgepoint is located on the southeast corner of the 15 and 56 interchange. If you're heading eastbound on the 56 take the first exit that is immediately after the ramp to 15 northbound. That road is Sabre Springs Parkway. If you're traveling on the 15 take the Ted Williams Parkway exit heading east. Exit (almost immediately) and turn right on Sabre Springs Parkway. Head south on Sabre Springs Parkway a very short distance. Take the second right which is Evening Creek Road. Travel a very short distance and turn into the third driveway you see on your right. Â We will be meeting in the Ashford building which is the one in the middle with the "Ashford.edu" sign on it. Park anywhere on the street or in the lot. Come inside the Ashford building and up to the fourth floor. Exit the elevators and look for the conference room labeled Leadership Room.
