Poets and Prophets: Salute to Songwriter Mike Reid

Sat, Mar 4, 2017 2:00 pm

Following an All-Pro football career with the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1970s, songwriter Mike Reid became a force as dominant in country music as he had been on the gridiron. He wrote thirteen #1 hits, including one (“Walk on Faith”) he recorded himself. A Pennsylvania native, Reid moved in 1980 to Nashville, where he got off to a fast start as a songwriter and eventually wrote a long list of hits for Ronnie Milsap. “Stranger in My House” won a Grammy for Best Country Song (1983). “Lost in the Fifties Tonight” was named ASCAP Country Song of the Year (1986). Reid’s songwriting profile rose further in the 1990s. Bonnie Raitt had a Top Twenty pop hit with Reid’s wistful ballad “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” and he wrote #1 country hits for Collin Raye (“In This Life”), Wynonna (“To Be Loved by You”), and Tim McGraw (“Everywhere”). This program will be illustrated with vintage photos, film footage, and recordings.

This program takes place in the Museum's Ford Theater and will also be streamed live at countrymusichalloffame.org/streaming. The live stream is powered by NewTek TriCaster.

After the program, Reid will sign Hatch Show Print posters commemorating the day. PROGRAM ADMISSION
